Can I fly if I have an ear infection (otitis)?

I have a flight back to London tomorrow but my ear is extremely painful and blocked. Is it safe to fly with an ear infection?

Flying with an active ear infection or severe congestion can be extremely painful and, in rare cases, cause eardrum damage due to pressure changes. It is highly recommended to have a doctor examine your ears before flying. If safe, they can prescribe decongestants or issue a fit-to-fly certificate; if unsafe, they will advise you to postpone travel and provide a medical certificate for your travel insurance.
