Healthcare in Palma: what visitors and residents should know

Palma's public healthcare is run by IB-Salut, the Servei de Salut de les Illes Balears, under the Balearic government's Conselleria de Salut. Catalan is co-official with Spanish and is the primary language of health administration across the islands. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. Palma is the Balearics' capital and its medical centre of gravity: the specialist services for the whole archipelago are concentrated here, so patients from Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera are routinely transferred to Palma for anything beyond island-level care. It is also one of the Mediterranean's busiest cruise ports, adding thousands of same-day visitors with no local registration. Being on an island materially changes the calculation if something goes wrong: onward transfer means a flight or ferry rather than a drive, and repatriation arrangements take longer to organise than on the mainland. Summer demand peaks steeply between June and September.
