Málaga's public healthcare comes under the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS), Andalusia's regional health service and the largest of Spain's seventeen by population served. Spanish is the sole official language. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Málaga functions as the gateway to the Costa del Sol: its airport handles the arrivals for the entire coastal strip, which means the city absorbs both a very large seasonal tourist load and a substantial permanent foreign-resident population inland and along the coast. That combination puts sustained pressure on SAS urgencias departments in summer, and waits at the busiest coastal centres lengthen considerably between June and September. The city itself has grown a significant remote-working community in recent years, adding year-round demand for prescriptions and routine care to what was historically a seasonal pattern. Andalusian summer heat is severe and inland excursions from the coast catch visitors out regularly.
