Healthcare in Barcelona is administered by CatSalut, the Servei Català de la Salut, which is Catalonia's own health service rather than a branch of a national one — it commissions care from a notably mixed set of public, municipal and non-profit hospital providers, which is why the hospital you are sent to may not be the one nearest to you. Catalan is co-official with Spanish and is the default language of health administration. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. As one of the Mediterranean's busiest cruise ports and Europe's most established digital-nomad cities, Barcelona sees an unusual mix: short-stay visitors arriving for a day with no local registration at all, and long-stay foreign residents who have never enrolled with a centro de salud.
