Healthcare in Lagos: what visitors and residents should know

Lagos is served by ULS do Algarve, the single region-wide local health unit created in the January 2024 restructuring of the Portuguese SNS. Portugal restructured its health service on 1 January 2024: the five regional health administrations (ARS) were dissolved and replaced by 39 Unidades Locais de Saúde (ULS), each combining hospitals and health centres under one management. For non-emergency symptoms the national triage line SNS 24 (808 24 24 24) assesses you by phone and directs you to self-care, a health centre or an emergency department. EHIC and UK GHIC holders access state care on resident terms. Out of hours, pharmacies run a rota — the farmácia de serviço — posted at every closed pharmacy. Lagos sits at the western end of the Algarve, and that geography matters: the region's main hospital provision is concentrated around Faro at the eastern end, roughly an hour and a half away, so the practical distance to a fully equipped emergency department is greater here than for visitors staying centrally. The town's tourism is a mix of families, surfers drawn to the Atlantic breaks around Sagres and the Costa Vicentina, and a long-established foreign-resident community, which gives it both a seasonal injury pattern from water sports and steady year-round demand for routine care. The exposed western Algarve coast is windier and cooler than the sheltered beaches further east, which regularly leads visitors to underestimate their sun exposure.
