In Spain, melatonin at 2 mg or more is regulated as a medicine, whereas below 2 mg it can be sold as a food supplement. Melatonite 3 mg and Melatonina Noxarem 3 mg and 5 mg are sold without a prescription and are licensed only for the short-term treatment of jet lag in adults. Circadin 2 mg prolonged-release tablets are sold under the same name and strength as in the UK, need a prescription in Spain, and are licensed for the short-term treatment of primary insomnia in people over 55.
