Albufeira is covered by ULS do Algarve, the region-wide local health unit established in January 2024 in place of the former regional health administration. Portugal restructured its health service on 1 January 2024: the five regional health administrations (ARS) were dissolved and replaced by 39 Unidades Locais de Saúde (ULS), each combining hospitals and health centres under one management. The resulting pattern of need is distinctive — sun and heat exposure, dehydration, minor injuries and sexual-health concerns, typically among visitors present for a week or less with no Portuguese registration and a flight to catch. Regional hospital provision is centred on Faro rather than Albufeira itself, so a visit to a fully equipped emergency department means leaving the resort area. Out of season the town empties substantially and much of the private provision aimed at visitors reduces its hours or closes.
