Córdoba is served by the Servicio Andaluz de Salud (SAS), the Andalusian regional health service, with Spanish the only official language. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. Córdoba is inland and, along with Seville, regularly records the highest summer temperatures in Western Europe — heat above 40°C is routine in July and August, and heat-related illness is the dominant seasonal presentation among visitors walking the Mezquita and the Judería in the middle of the day. The city's tourism is heavily concentrated into short stays and day trips from Seville and Málaga, so visitors are often here for a single day with no local registration and no intention of waiting in an urgencias department. Its May patio festival brings a sharp seasonal peak in visitor numbers. Outside the summer months Córdoba is quieter and cooler than the coast, with a demand pattern closer to a Spanish provincial city than a resort.
