Healthcare in Salamanca: what visitors and residents should know

Salamanca comes under SACYL, the Gerencia Regional de Salud de Castilla y León, the regional health service for Spain's largest autonomous community by area. Spanish is the only official language. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. Salamanca's health demand is dominated by its university: the Universidad de Salamanca, founded in 1218 and the oldest in Spain, together with the city's many Spanish-language schools, gives it one of the highest concentrations of international students and Erasmus arrivals in the country relative to its size. That population characteristically arrives for a term or a summer course, has not registered with a centro de salud, needs contraception, repeat prescriptions and mental-health support, and is navigating the system in a second language. The city is inland on the Castilian meseta at around 800 metres, with cold winters and a marked respiratory-illness season, and its visitor numbers rise and fall with the academic calendar rather than the beach season.
