The historic centre is built on a steep granite outcrop above the Tagus, and its cobbled gradients produce a steady stream of falls, sprains and ankle injuries among visitors in unsuitable footwear. Summers on the Castilian plain are hot and dry with very little shade in the old town, and heat-related illness among day visitors is common in July and August.
