Healthcare in Mallorca: what visitors and residents should know

Mallorca's public healthcare is provided by IB-Salut, the Servei de Salut de les Illes Balears, with Catalan co-official alongside Spanish throughout the system. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. The island's specialist and hospital capacity is concentrated around Palma, so if you are staying in the north around Alcúdia and Pollença, in the Tramuntana villages or on the eastern coast, the nearest fully equipped urgencias department can be a long drive from your accommodation — and considerably longer on summer roads. Mallorca also has a substantial year-round foreign-resident community, particularly German and British, alongside its seasonal visitors, which sustains demand for repeat prescriptions and continuity of care outside the tourist months. The island is a major road-cycling and hiking destination in spring and autumn, giving it a distinct pattern of musculoskeletal injuries in the shoulder seasons rather than only in high summer.
