Menorca is served by IB-Salut, the Servei de Salut de les Illes Balears, with Catalan co-official alongside Spanish. State healthcare is run at regional level, so the rules you meet depend on where you are rather than on Spain as a whole. EU, EEA and Swiss visitors holding an EHIC (or a UK GHIC) can use public primary care and emergency departments on the same terms as residents, though you will normally be asked for the card plus photo ID at reception. Outside surgery hours, pharmacies operate a rota — the farmacia de guardia — and the duty pharmacy is posted in the window of every closed chemist. Menorca is the most consequential case in the Balearics for understanding island healthcare limits: it is a small island with correspondingly limited specialist provision, and anything beyond what can be handled locally means transfer to Palma on Mallorca — by air or sea, on a schedule that is not immediate. Planning around that constraint matters more here than almost anywhere else in Spain. The island is a UNESCO biosphere reserve with deliberately restrained development, so the resort-town infrastructure and English-language private clinic density found on Mallorca and Ibiza is thinner, and out of season a good deal of it closes entirely. Visitor numbers are strongly seasonal, concentrated into summer, with a quiet winter in which local services run at a much reduced tempo.
